Pensioners on the rise
22/08/2008
There are more pensioners than children for the first time ever, new data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed.
The ONS says the increase in pensioners is partly down to the number of women born in the baby boom immediately after World War II, who reached 60, the state pension age in 2007.
Men of the same generation will not reach state pension age 65 until 2012.
The statistics also show that the percentage of the population under 16 has been declining since 1995, but this is the first year that it has dropped below the percentage of pensioners.
